Do Plants Breathe Too? – The Secret of Tiny Leaf Pores
“Where is Hamza?”
After all, he was the one who first asked about the watermelon seed.
Well… Hamza had gone on a school study tour for a few days.
But today—
He was back. 🎒
🌱 Back to the Garden
Ali and Zara were already in their aunt’s garden when they heard a familiar voice.
“Hey! What did I miss?”
It was Hamza!
Zara ran toward him,
“You missed EVERYTHING! Plants make food, roots drink water—”
Ali added proudly,
“And leaves are like little kitchens!”
Hamza’s eyes lit up.
“Wait… really? Plants cook food?!”
Their aunt smiled,
“Looks like we need a quick revision.”
🍃 A New Question
After listening carefully, Hamza looked at a leaf and asked:
“So plants eat… drink…”
He paused.
“But do they breathe too?”
Zara giggled,
“That’s funny! Plants don’t have noses!”
Hamza crossed his arms,
“Hmm… but they are alive, right?”
Their aunt nodded,
“Good thinking, Hamza.”
🔍 The Hidden Secret
She gently picked a green leaf and held it up.
“Plants don’t have noses like us…”
She paused for a moment.
“But they still take in air and release air.”
Ali leaned closer,
“How?”
🚪 Tiny Invisible Doors
“On the surface of every leaf,” she explained,
“there are tiny invisible pores.”
“Pores?” Zara asked.
“Yes,” she said,
“they are like microscopic doors.”
Hamza smiled,
“Doors for air?”
“Exactly.”
💨 How Plants ‘Breathe’
“These tiny pores allow plants to take in carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air…”
“And release oxygen back into the air.”
Ali’s eyes widened,
“So plants are helping us breathe?!”
“Yes,” their aunt said,
“We take in oxygen… and plants help provide it.”
👃 Humans vs Plants
Zara thought for a moment.
“So how is this different from us?”
Their aunt explained:
“Humans use lungs 👃 to breathe.”
“But plants…”
She pointed to the leaf again.
“Plants use tiny pores on their leaves 🍃.”
🧠 Hamza’s Big Realization
Hamza looked at the leaf and smiled.
“So… plants don’t have noses…”
He looked at Ali and Zara and said:
“But they still breathe in their own way.”
Their aunt nodded proudly,
“That’s exactly right.”
🌍 Silent Helpers
“Remember,” she added softly,
“Plants do this quietly… all the time.”
“Even when we don’t notice… they are helping keep the air fresh for us.”
Zara smiled,
“So plants are like silent heroes.”
🎯 Mini Activity for Kids
