As they reached their doorstep, Zara had one more question.
"Dad… if my body breathes automatically…"
She paused.
"…what happens if I CHOOSE to hold my breath?"
Dad smiled.
"Now THAT…"
He opened the front door.
"…is a question about control."
π§ Who Is Really in Charge?
The kids sat down inside. Dad put his keys on the table.
"Let me ask you something," he said.
"Can you hold your breath right now?"
Ali took a deep breath and held it.
His cheeks puffed out.
His eyes widened.
Seconds passed…
1… 2… 3… 4… 5… 6… 7… 8… 9… 10…
Then—
GASP!
Ali breathed out fast.
"For a moment… it felt like my body panicked!"
Dad nodded.
"Why not?"
Ali thought.
"My body… just took over?"
"Exactly," Dad said.
⚔️ The Battle Between You and Your Body
Dad drew a simple diagram in the air:

KNOCK! KNOCK! BREATHE NOW!
"And then—"
He clapped his hands.
BOOM! Your body takes over.

When you hold your breath:
Oxygen in your body starts to go down
Carbon dioxide starts to build up
Your brain senses danger π¨

“BREATHE NOW!”
That’s why you feel:
