The Story Begins

The dinner plates were still warm.

Mummy Lisa had just said the heart — and sixty thousand miles — and Hamza was sitting very still with his hand pressed flat against his own chest, feeling something he had never really noticed before.

A beat. Then another. Quiet, steady, completely automatic.

It never stopped, Mummy Lisa had said. Not once. Not even for a second.

"Does it ever get tired?" Hamza asked.

Before Mummy Lisa could answer, the doorbell rang.


Ali looked up. Zara closed her notebook halfway. Hamza didn't move his hand from his chest.

Mummy Lisa was already at the door.

They heard voices in the hallway — her warm greeting, a quieter response, the sound of shoes being removed. Then she came back into the dining room, and behind her was a man the children recognised but didn't know very well.

Uncle Daoud.

He was tall, and he moved carefully, the way people do when they are used to small spaces that require precision. He wasn't loud. He didn't come in smiling widely or filling the room with noise. He looked around the dining table — the empty plates, the ghee bowl, the glass with the oil-and-water demonstration still sitting on the counter — and he nodded once, as if he understood more than he'd been told.

"Your mother said you've been learning," he said.

He sat down at the table. Mummy Lisa put a plate in front of him. He picked up his fork.

The children watched him.

He ate. He asked Ali about school. He asked Zara what she'd been drawing in her notebook. He didn't mention science. He didn't mention the heart.

Hamza lasted approximately ninety seconds.

"Uncle Daoud," he said. "Did you know your heart has never stopped? Not even once? Not even when you were asleep?"

Uncle Daoud put his fork down.

Slowly.

He looked at Hamza across the table in a way that made the room go very quiet.

"Who told you that?" he said.

"Mummy," Hamza said, suddenly uncertain.

A pause. Uncle Daoud looked at Mummy Lisa. Then back at Hamza.

"She's right," he said quietly. "And I know — because I've held one. While it was still beating."

Nobody spoke.

"A human heart," he said. "In my hands. Beating." He turned his palm upward on the table, as if he could still feel the weight of it. "The first time it happened, I stood completely still for a moment. Because there is nothing else like it. Nothing in medicine, nothing in science — nothing prepares you for holding the thing that has never, in an entire human life, been allowed to rest."

Zara had her notebook fully open now.

Hamza's hand was back on his chest.

"Will you tell us about it?" Ali asked.

Uncle Daoud picked up his fork again. "After dinner," he said. "Eat first. The science will still be there."


🏠 The Organ That Never Rests

When the plates were cleared, Uncle Daoud pushed his chair back slightly and turned to face the children properly.

"Your mother has taken you through breathing," he said. "Through digestion. Through the brain." He glanced at Mummy Lisa. "All the way to the liver, I understand."

"And you're going to tell us how everything gets where it needs to go," Zara said.

"I am." He folded his hands on the table. "But first — put your hand on your chest. Left side, slightly toward the Centre."

All three children did.

"What do you feel?"

"A beat," Ali said.

"Two beats," Hamza said. "Like — lub-dub. Lub-dub."

Uncle Daud nodded. "That sound — that lub-dub — is not the heart muscle itself. It's the sound of your heart's valves closing. Doors, slamming shut in a precise sequence, to make sure blood travels in one direction only and never goes backwards." He paused. "You've been hearing that sound your entire life. Every moment you've been alive. You just never knew what it was."


❤️ The Heart: What It Actually Is

"Your heart," Uncle Daoud said, "is a muscle. About the size of your fist." He held up his own fist. "Sitting slightly left of centre in your chest, protected by your ribcage and surrounded by a thin sac called the pericardium — a kind of jacket that holds it in place and reduces friction as it moves."

"It moves?" Hamza said.

"It squeezes. Constantly. That squeezing is what pumps blood. And it does this — " he glanced at his watch — "roughly sixty to one hundred times per minute. Every minute. Of every hour. Of every day. Of your entire life, beginning before you were even born."

"Before we were born?" Ali said.

"Your heart begins beating approximately three weeks after conception. Long before you had a face, or fingers, or a complete brain — your heart was already working."

Zara wrote that down without looking up.


🚪 Four Rooms, One Pump

"Now," Uncle Daoud said, "the heart is not one simple pump. It is four chambers — four rooms — working together in a sequence so precise that even a fraction of a second's mistiming causes problems."

He took Zara's notebook, turned to a blank page, and drew a simple shape — something like a rounded square divided into four sections.

"Two rooms on the right side. Two rooms on the left. Each pair has one room on top — called an atrium — and one room below — called a ventricle."

He labelled them:

  • Right atrium — top right
  • Right ventricle — bottom right
  • Left atrium — top left
  • Left ventricle — bottom left

"The atria — the top rooms — receive blood coming in to the heart. The ventricles — the bottom rooms — pump blood out."

"So blood comes in at the top and gets pushed out at the bottom?" Ali said.

"Roughly, yes. And between each atrium and its ventricle — and at each exit point — there is a valve. A door that opens to let blood through and snaps shut immediately after, so blood cannot flow backwards."

"That's the lub-dub," Hamza said, sitting straighter.

"The lub is the first set of valves closing. The dub is the second set." Uncle Daoud handed the notebook back to Zara. "Two sounds. Four valves. One heartbeat."


🔄 The Sequence: What Happens in One Heartbeat

"Let me walk you through one single heartbeat," Uncle Daoud said. "From the moment blood arrives, to the moment it leaves."

He held up one finger.

"Blood arrives in the right atrium — coming back from the body, carrying carbon dioxide and very little oxygen. The right atrium fills. The valve between the right atrium and right ventricle opens. Blood flows down into the right ventricle."

Second finger.

"The right ventricle contracts — squeezes — and pumps that blood out. Not to the body. To the lungs." He paused to let that land. "The right side of your heart sends blood to the lungs to collect oxygen and drop off carbon dioxide. This is one loop. We'll come back to it."

Third finger.

"Now the blood returns from the lungs — fresh, full of oxygen — and arrives in the left atrium. The valve opens. Blood flows down into the left ventricle."

Fourth finger.

"The left ventricle contracts. And this time — " he pressed his palm flat on the table for emphasis — "it pushes blood out to the entire body. Every organ. Every muscle. Every cell. All sixty thousand miles of tubing. The left ventricle has to be powerful enough to push blood all the way to your toes and back."

"Is that why it's stronger than the right side?" Zara asked.

Uncle Daoud looked at her. "You worked that out yourself?"

"It has further to push," she said simply.

"The left ventricle," he said, "has walls roughly three times thicker than the right ventricle. You are exactly correct."


💓 Pulse: The Heartbeat You Can Feel

"Hold out your wrist," Uncle Daoud said.

The children extended their wrists toward him.

He pressed two fingers — not his thumb — gently against the inside of Ali's wrist, just below the base of the thumb.

"Feel that?" he said.

Ali's eyes widened slightly. "Yes."

"That's your radial pulse. Every time your left ventricle contracts and pushes blood out, a wave of pressure travels through your arteries — all the way to your wrist, where you can feel it from the outside." He showed them how to find their own pulse. "Count the beats for fifteen seconds and multiply by four. That gives you your heart rate per minute."

They all tried. Hamza counted fastest and announced seventeen beats in fifteen seconds.

"Sixty-eight beats per minute," Uncle Daoud said. "Perfectly normal."

"Mine's higher," Ali said, slightly suspicious of himself.

"You've been thinking about hearts for the last ten minutes. That's enough to raise it slightly." A small smile. "The heart responds to almost everything — emotion, exercise, temperature, fear, even interesting conversation."


🩺 What Uncle Daoud Heard the First Time

The room had grown comfortable now — the initial strangeness of Uncle Daoud had dissolved somewhere between the four chambers and the pulse-counting.

Hamza, who had been waiting for the right moment, finally asked.

"What did it feel like? When you held the beating heart?"

Uncle Daoud was quiet for a moment.

"It was during a surgery," he said. "I was still training. The senior surgeon placed it — briefly — in my hands so I could understand the weight of it. What I was working to protect." He looked at his open palm again.

 "It was warm. Much warmer than I expected. And it was moving — this steady, rhythmic contraction, completely independent of anything I was doing. It didn't need me. It didn't need my permission. It was simply... doing what it had always done."

"Did it scare you?" Hamza asked.

"It made me very careful," Uncle Daoud said. "For the rest of my career." He folded his hands. "When you understand what a heart is — how long it has been working, how precisely it is built, how much depends on it — you don't take it lightly. Not ever."


🔗 The Question That Comes Next

Zara looked at her diagram. Four chambers. Arrows showing blood moving in, down, out to lungs, back, down again, out to the body.

"So the heart sends blood in two directions," she said slowly. "Right side to the lungs. Left side to the whole body."

"Two loops," Uncle Daoud confirmed. "One small, one enormous. And they share the same blood — the same red cells, the same plasma carrying the nutrients your mother has been teaching you about. Oxygen from your lungs and glucose from your digested food — both travelling in the same blood, through the same vessels, to the same cells."

"Everything connects," Ali said.

"Everything connects," Uncle Daoud agreed. "The breathing arc. The digestion arc. The brain arc. All of it moves through the circulatory system. This is the transport network that makes every other system possible."

He stood to leave — it was getting late.

"Next time," he said, pulling on his jacket, "I'll show you where that blood actually goes. The sixty thousand miles. Why some vessels are wide enough to put your finger in, and some are so narrow that red blood cells have to squeeze through in single file."

Hamza's eyes went wide.

"Single file?"

"Single file," Uncle Daoud said. "One at a time, pressed flat, moving through vessels thinner than a human hair." He buttoned his jacket. "Sleep well. Your heart will keep working while you do."

He left quietly, the way he had arrived.

The children sat for a moment.

Then Hamza pressed his hand back against his chest.

"It's still going," he said softly. "Lub-dub. Lub-dub."

"It always was," Zara said. "We just didn't know what it was."


🎯 Kids Activity: "Find Your Heart"

Try these at home:

1. The Pulse Hunt Using two fingers (not your thumb), press gently on the inside of your wrist just below your thumb. Can you feel your pulse? Now try your neck, just beside your windpipe. These are two different places where an artery runs close to the skin.

2. Count Your Heart Rate Count your pulse beats for 15 seconds. Multiply by 4. That's your resting heart rate. Now do 20 jumping jacks. Count again immediately. What happened? Why do you think your heart beats faster after exercise?

3. The Four Rooms Drawing Draw the heart's four chambers from memory — right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle. Draw arrows showing which direction blood moves through each room. Which side goes to the lungs? Which side goes to the body?

Discuss:

  • Why does the heart have valves? What would happen without them?
  • Why is the left ventricle stronger than the right?
  • Your heart has been beating since before you were born — what does that tell you about how important it is?

And the traffic was his blood.

And it was happening right now, while he lay completely still, in the dark, without doing anything at all.

Sixty thousand miles, he thought.

All inside me.

All the time.
