The Story Begins

Saturday morning.

Dad was in the kitchen making tea when the doorbell rang.

He smiled before he even reached the door.

The children heard a voice from the hallway — quick, warm, slightly breathless, the voice of someone who had been travelling and hadn't quite stopped moving yet.

"The flight was delayed, the bags were lost — well, one bag — and I had to explain to the man at customs what a DNA sequencer is and why I was carrying one in my hand luggage—"

Dad laughed.

"Come in, Lily."

She appeared in the kitchen doorway.

Aunt Lily.

She was younger than the children expected — not much older than a university student, it seemed, though that couldn't be right. She had a small backpack over one shoulder, a jacket that looked like it had been worn on a very long journey, and an expression of someone who found everything around her immediately interesting.

She looked at the three children at the breakfast table.

"You must be Ali," she said, pointing. "Zara." Point. "Hamza." Point.

"How do you know which is which?" Hamza asked.

"Your dad described you perfectly," she said. She dropped her backpack, pulled out a chair, and sat down without being invited. "He said one of you carries objects in his pocket, one of you has a notebook always open, and one of you looks like he's about to connect two things that nobody else has connected yet."

Hamza looked at his pocket. Then at Zara's notebook. Then at Ali, who was indeed sitting with a slightly distant expression.

"That's accurate," he said.

"I know." Aunt Lily looked around the kitchen. "Is there tea? And also — I heard someone has been waiting to talk about DNA since Blog 37 and I am here to finally have that conversation."


🔬 What Even Is DNA?

Dad set a cup of tea in front of Aunt Lily and sat down himself.

"They've been learning about cells," he said. "They know the nucleus. They know it holds instructions."

"Good start," Aunt Lily said. She picked up her tea. "So. Who can tell me what DNA actually stands for?"

Silence.

"We never learned that," Zara said.

"Deoxyribonucleic acid," Aunt Lily said cheerfully.

"That is a terrible name," Hamza said.

"Agreed. Scientists named it before they knew how important it was, and then it was too late to change." She set her cup down. "Forget the name. Think about what it does."

"It holds instructions," Ali said.

"For what?"

"For the cell. What kind of cell it is. What it does. How it works."

"More than that," Aunt Lily said. "DNA holds the instructions for building an entire living thing. Not just one cell — the whole organism. Every feature of you — your height, the colour of your eyes, the shape of your nose, the way your cells make proteins, how your immune system recognizes invaders — all of it, written in DNA."

"Written how?" Zara asked, pencil ready.

"That," Aunt Lily said, "is where it gets beautiful."


🧬 The Four Letters

Aunt Lily reached into her backpack and pulled out four coloured pens.

Red. Blue. Green. Yellow.

She set them on the table in a line.

"DNA," she said, "is written in a code. And that code has exactly four letters."

"Four?" Hamza said. "That's not many."

"It's enough for everything," Aunt Lily said. "Every instruction for every living thing that has ever existed — written in four letters."

She picked up the red pen. "A."

Blue pen. "T."

Green pen. "G."

Yellow pen. "C."

"Adenine. Thymine. Guanine. Cytosine," she said. "Four chemicals — called bases — that make up the alphabet of life."

"Four letters," Ali said slowly. "To write everything."

"Our alphabet has twenty-six letters," Zara said. "And we can write anything with it. So four—"

"Arranged in sequences of three billion pairs," Aunt Lily said, "is more than enough to write the instructions for a human being."

Hamza stared at the four pens.

"Three billion," he said.

"Three billion base pairs," Aunt Lily confirmed. "In every cell. In your body."

"Every cell has the FULL set?" Hamza said.

"Every cell. Your heart cell and your skin cell and your neuron and your white blood cell — all of them carrying the complete instructions for the entire you. Most of those instructions are switched off in any given cell — only the relevant ones are active. But the full set is always there."

Hamza pressed his finger to the table, thinking about the skin cells underneath.

"The full instructions," he said quietly. "For me. In every single one."


🌀 What Does DNA Look Like?

"Now," Aunt Lily said, "what do you think DNA looks like? Not the letters — the actual physical structure."

"A spiral?" Zara guessed.

"What made you guess that?"

"I've seen the symbol for it," Zara said. "The double helix. I didn't know what it meant."

"Draw two lines," Aunt Lily said.

Zara drew two parallel lines in her notebook.

"Now twist them around each other," Aunt Lily said. "Like a rope. Or a spiral staircase."

Zara twisted the lines into a helix shape.

"That's the basic idea," Aunt Lily said. "Two strands, coiling around each other. And between the two strands — rungs, like a ladder. Each rung is a pair of bases."

She picked up the red and blue pens.

"A always pairs with T," she said, clicking the pens together.

She picked up the green and yellow pens.

"G always pairs with C."

"Always?" Ali asked.

"Always. Without exception. In every living thing on Earth." She set the pens down. "That pairing rule is why DNA can be copied so precisely. You unzip the ladder down the middle, and each half acts as a template for building a new matching half. A finds T. G finds C. The instructions copy themselves."

"Every time a cell divides," Ali said slowly. "It copies the DNA first."

"So every new cell gets the full set of instructions," Zara said.

"From the very first cell," Ali said. He was very still. "The watermelon seed. One cell. With a full set of DNA. That copied itself, again and again, into every cell of the whole plant." He looked at Aunt Lily. "All those cells came from copying that first set of instructions."

"Yes," Aunt Lily said.

"And all of my cells," Ali said, "came from copying the DNA in the one cell I started as."

"Yes."

"So every cell in my body," Ali said, "is running on a copy of the same original instructions."

"Exactly," Aunt Lily said.

Ali sat back.

"That's — that's extraordinary," he said.

"It is," Aunt Lily agreed. "And I've been studying it for six years and it still feels that way."


📦 Where Does It Fit?

"But wait," Hamza said. "Three billion base pairs. In every cell. How does it actually FIT? Cells are tiny. We learned they're smaller than a grain of sand."

"This is one of my favourite facts in all of biology," Aunt Lily said, sitting forward slightly.

"Why?" Hamza said, immediately suspicious that it was going to be something that made his head hurt.

"If you took the DNA from one single human cell and stretched it out into a straight line — how long do you think it would be?"

Hamza thought. "A few centimetres?"

"Two metres," Aunt Lily said.

Hamza stared at her.

"Two METRES," he said. "From one cell?"

"Two metres of DNA, coiled and folded and packed so precisely that it fits inside a nucleus you cannot see without a microscope."

"How?" Hamza said.

“Think of DNA like a very long thread wrapped and folded again and again to fit inside a tiny space.”

"So it wraps around proteins called histones," Aunt Lily said. "Like thread wound around a spool. Then those spools are coiled. And those coils are coiled again. Layer after layer of folding, until two metres of DNA is packed into a space far smaller than the full stop at the end of this sentence."

Hamza looked at the end of the sentence in Zara's notebook.

He looked at his own fingertip.

"Every cell," he said. "Two metres of DNA. Folded up inside a space I can't even see."

"Every cell," Aunt Lily confirmed.

Hamza sat back in his chair and looked at the ceiling.

"Right," he said. "I need a minute."


🌍 The Same Code, Everywhere

"Here's the thing that amazes me most," Aunt Lily said. She picked up all four pens again. "These four letters. A, T, G, C. The same four. Used by every living thing on Earth."

"Every living thing?" Zara said. "Not just animals?"

"Not just animals. Plants. Fungi. Bacteria. The algae in the ocean. The yeast that makes bread rise. Every virus." She set the pens down. "The same four-letter code. In everything."

"Even the watermelon plant?" Hamza said.

"Even the watermelon plant. Different sequence of letters — different instructions, different organism. But the same four letters, the same base-pairing rules, the same double helix structure."

"So we share the same code," Ali said. "With a watermelon."

"And with a beetle," Aunt Lily said. "And with the bacteria in your gut. And with the oak tree in the park." She paused. "And that's not a coincidence."

"Why not?" Zara asked.

"Because every living thing on Earth descended from the same common ancestor. Billions of years ago — one organism, with this four-letter code. Everything since then, every branch of life, has been using variations of that same original code." She looked at them. "You and the watermelon share DNA. Not much — but some. A small percentage of your DNA does the same job as a small percentage of the watermelon's DNA."

"Because we had the same great-great-great—" Hamza started counting "—billions of times great — ancestor?"

"Yes," Aunt Lily said simply.

Hamza looked at the four pens on the table.

"That seed," he said. "In Part 1. Ali threw it into the soil. We've been learning about everything since." He paused. "And now you're telling us that the watermelon's DNA and my DNA have some of the same letters in them."

"Some of the same sequences," Aunt Lily said. "Yes."

Hamza picked up the four pens.

He held them for a moment.

"We're related," he said. "To the watermelon."

"Distantly," Dad said from across the kitchen, where he had been quietly refilling his tea.

"But yes," Aunt Lily said.

Hamza set the pens back down very carefully.

"I'm going to need a much bigger notebook," he said.


🔗 Connecting Back

Zara had been writing the whole time, but now she stopped and looked at her notebook from the beginning of the genetics section.

"In Blog 37," she said, "Dr. Rehman pointed at the nucleus and said 'encoded in something called DNA — that deserves its own story.'" She looked at Aunt Lily. "It took eleven posts to get here."

"Was it worth the wait?" Aunt Lily asked.

Zara looked at her notes. Three billion base pairs. Four letters. Two metres per cell. Same code in everything alive.

"Yes," she said.

"Good." Aunt Lily picked up her tea. "Because that was just the introduction."

"There's more?" Hamza said.

"So much more," Aunt Lily said. She smiled. "We haven't even talked about genes yet. Or what happens when the instructions get passed from a parent to a child. Or why you look like you do. Or what happens when one letter in three billion gets changed."

She looked at the three of them.

"DNA is the introduction," she said. "The real story is what it does."


🎯 Kids Activity: "Write in DNA Code"

Make your own DNA message.

DNA uses four letters: A, T, G, C

Each group of three letters is called a codon — one instruction.

Try this:

  1. Choose a short word — your name, or "LIFE" or "CELL"
  2. Assign each letter of the alphabet to a DNA codon (three-letter combination). For example: A = ATG, B = TGC, C = GCA...
  3. Write your word in your DNA code
  4. Give it to someone else to decode

Now think:

  • If your message is three letters long, how many DNA bases did you use?
  • If a human has three billion base pairs — how many three-letter codons is that?
  • What do you think happens if one letter changes?

The ladder drawing: Draw a DNA double helix — two lines twisting around each other with rungs between them. On each rung, write a base pair: A-T or G-C. Remember — A always pairs with T, G always pairs with C.


👩‍🏫 Parent / Teacher Tip

This post introduces DNA — the full name, the four bases (A, T, G, C), the base-pairing rule (A-T, G-C), the double helix structure, the scale (three billion base pairs, two metres per cell, folded into a microscopic nucleus via histones), and the universality of the genetic code across all living things.

Aunt Lily is introduced here as the new arc's guide — a young geneticist, recently returned from studies, energetic and immediately warm. Her personality is deliberately different from previous characters: less philosophical than Dad, less hands-on than Mummy Lisa, less quietly authoritative than Uncle Daoud. She is enthusiastic, specific, and finds genuine delight in the detail.

🔥 What Comes Next

After Aunt Lily left to finally unpack her recovered bag, the three children sat at the kitchen table.

Hamza had the four pens lined up in front of him. Red. Blue. Green. Yellow.

A. T. G. C.

"Three billion pairs," he said. "And every three letters is one instruction."

"A codon," Zara said, writing the word.

"So a billion instructions," Hamza said. "In every cell."

"Not exactly," Ali said slowly. "The instructions aren't all separate codons strung together randomly. They're organized into sections. Specific sections that do specific things."

He looked at Zara.

"Like chapters in a book," he said.

"Or instructions for one specific feature," Zara said. "Eye colour. Height. Blood type."

They looked at each other.

"Those are called genes," Hamza said. He said it with the quiet certainty of someone who had been waiting to use a word for a long time.

"Is that right?" Ali said.

"I think so," Hamza said.

"That's tomorrow's question," Zara said.

She wrote it at the top of a fresh page.

"What is a gene?"

She looked at it.

"Forty-seven stories to get to DNA," she said.

"Worth it," Hamza said.

“But if DNA is the instruction… who writes it? And can it change?”

He picked up the four pens and put them in his pocket, alongside the button, the white bead, the clear plastic, and the coin.

His pocket was getting full.

He didn't mind.

“But if DNA is the instruction… who writes it? And can it change?”


"Four letters. Three billion pairs. Two metres, folded into a space too small to see. The same code in every living thing on Earth, from the tallest tree to the smallest bacterium. DNA is not just the instructions for you. It is the instructions for life itself — written in a language so simple, and so complete, that it has needed no revision in four billion years."
